How English is tested in CPO
Paper 1 has four sections — reasoning, general knowledge, quantitative aptitude and English comprehension. Candidates who clear Paper 1 and the physical tests sit Paper 2, which is English Language and Comprehension alone. Because Paper 2 counts towards the merit, CPO rewards English more than any other SSC exam.
What Paper 2 asks
- Error spotting, fill in the blanks, sentence improvement — in volume.
- Synonyms, antonyms, idioms, one-word substitution, spellings.
- Active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech, sentence rearrangement.
- Several cloze tests and comprehension passages — reading speed is the deciding skill.
How to prepare
- Cover the full grammar syllabus with a practice set after every rule — CPO volume exposes any rule you half know.
- Read one editorial-length passage daily and answer questions on it; time yourself.
- Revise vocabulary daily from your own mistakes — Paper 2's vocabulary pool is wider than CGL Tier 1's.
- Take full-length English-only mocks to build stamina; a long English paper tires attention in a way short sections do not.
